Types of Medical/Health insurance

For any salaried employee, Health/Medical Insurance is compulsary, The premium is deducted from the salary as per Japan employment regulations, Also note apart from Health insurance, Also there is one more insurance deducted from monthly salary as “Social Insurance” which is discussed in “Living in Japan” section under Taxes in Japan category, It is not discussed here, This section goes through Health Insurance & Finding Doctor.

Description of the Benefit

Medical Expenses

When you submit your insurance card at the reception desk of a hospital or other medical institution and receive medical treatment.

Only 30% of the cost of the medical treatment is personally borne. (20% for infants of less than 3 years of age)

When you submit your insurance card and Advanced Age Recipient Certificate at the reception desk of a hospital or other medical institution and receive medical treatment.

Personal payment of only 10% or 20% of medical expenses

If a person receives emergency medical treatment and does not have his or her insurance card on hand at the time, he or she may be initially required to pay the full medical bill. The person then should take the hospital bill receipt to the National Health Insurance Section of your local ward, city, town or village office, which may refund 70-90% (depending upon the share of self-bearing expenses) of the amount of any treatment covered by the insurance.
Partial cost of medicines for outpatients and the cost of meals during hospitalization must be borne separately.

Lump-Sum Childbirth Subsidy

When a child is born (including stillbirths and miscarriages that occur on or after the 85th day of pregnancy).

¥300,000-¥350,000 per child.

High Medical Expense

If one person pays more than a designated amount in medical expenses at one medical institution within the same month.

By applying to the local ward, city, town or village office, a refund of the amount in excess is provided.

Funeral Expense

When a member dies and a funeral is conducted.

¥30,000-¥70,000 is provided.
